Chris Rock didn’t just share his first name with Saturday Night Live co-star Chris Farley — the two also had a great friendship. In a recent interview with Esquire to promote his upcoming film, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, Rock opened up about his final days with Farley. While reminiscing over an old photo of the two of them posed with Adam Sandler and David Spade (also noting the four of them were labeled “The Bad Boys of SNL“), Rock shared a touching anecdote about the story behind the photo.
“This looks like one of the last times I saw Chris alive,” Rock said of the photo, which was taken during one of Rock’s first big comedy tours. “I would see him one more time when I did a gig in Chicago. We tried to hang out afterwards, but… I don’t know if you’ve ever really hung out with an addict. Towards the end, anything that isn’t the drug is a chore.”
Farley died of a morphine and cocaine overdose in 1997, after years battling against drug and alcohol addiction. But he left a lifelong imprint on Rock, who went on to memorialize him in a song when he hosted SNL over two decades later in 2019. The actor can still recall his exact thoughts in the last moments he was with Farley.
“I remember I was at his apartment,” Rock told Esquire. “He was showing me his apartment. I leave, I see him out the window, and I was like, ‘That’s probably the last time I’m going to see him.’ I knew.”
Rock will never forget the friendship shared with The Bad Boys of SNL.
“Me, Sandler, Spade, and Farley—we shared an office at Saturday Night Live,” Rock said. “We called it a dorm. We’re friends to this day. I love those guys.”
