There’s a lot in Netflix’s The Sons of Sam that will leave you feeling shocked. But there’s one tiny detail that may be most jaw-dropping in this four-part docuseries about a notorious serial killer, mismatched police sketches, and conspiracy theories about Satanic cults, Scientology, and dog possession. That voice you’re hearing? That’s Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated The Ant Bully star Paul Giamatti.

The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness isn’t your typical true crime docuseries. Though the first episode does offer a deep dive into the case that terrorized New York City in the 1970s, Sons of Sam is really about journalist Maury Terry. Terry became convinced that the Son of Sam killings weren’t committed by David Berkowitz alone. As many other believers and experts point out in the docuseries, the eye witness police sketches that emerged during this time don’t match.

Then there’s the matter of New York City itself. In a city that’s so densely populated and that was on such high alert at the time, it seems unlikely that one man could get away with so many crimes while acting alone. As Terry and others believe, the Son of Sam killings were the work of multiple criminals either acting together or as copycats that Berkowitz later claimed were his own. The docuseries makes a good argument that this case was tied up by police too quickly.

But that’s not all Terry believed. He thought the Son of Sam killings were the work of a nationwide Satanic cult. Terry managed to trace this cult back to The Church of Scientology and Charles Manson’s family. His dedication to these conspiracy theories cost Terry his professional credibility and personal friends. The Sons of Sam is a docuseries that explores the possible hidden truth of this case, the gullibility of the public, and the dangers of being swept away by conspiracy theory rabbit holes all at once.

So how does Paul Giamatti fit into all of this? In 2015, Terry died of heart failure at the age of 69. That’s why Giamatti (Fred Claus) reads Terry’s articles and notes, lending a voice to this man who’s already passed. Even if you’re not sure if you know Paul Giamatti, you know him. The actor has starred in everything from Saving Private Ryan and Big Fat Liar to Sideways and Cinderella Man. Today he’s best known for playing U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades in Showtime’s Billions. He also lended his voice to the PlayStation 4’s Ratchet & Clank and worked on the My Favorite Murder audiobook Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered. That’s just a fun fact.

So yes, you do know that voice at the center of The Sons of Sam. If this docuseries is ever adapted into a movie or a miniseries, we already know who’s going to play its second lead.
