The first and most obvious thing you’ll notice about the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning Master of None is the complete lack of Aziz Ansari.
Don’t get us wrong, he’s still very much in the mix. Ansari is still directing, co-writing and Executive producing Season 3, only this time, Ansari has moved his character, Dev Shah, to the background, as well as his now more complicated offstage persona out of the picture. Instead, the focus is on Lena Waithe’s Denise. The season even has its own subtitle: Moments In Love.
We saw more of Denise’s world in the second-season “Thanksgiving” episode, which earned Waithe and Ansari the 2017 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
Now, we change scenery entirely, away from New York City and Italy, to the married life of Denise and her partner Alicia, who’s played by Naomi Ackie (last seen in Star Wars, Episode XI: The Rise of Skywalker, but last celebrated with a BAFTA for her role on Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World).We see Denise and Alicia socially distant from everyone else in the world, seemingly, except for each other. Netflix teases, “this new season is a modern love story that intimately illustrates the ups and downs of marriage, struggles with fertility, and personal growth both together and apart. Fleeting romantic highs meet crushing personal losses while existential questions of love and living are raised.”
Ansari, who has won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for the series he co-created with Alan Yang, wrote a best-selling book on “Modern Romance” but found his karmic comeuppance in 2018 when a woman he dated accused him of sexual misconduct. Ansari denied her charges, but in his subsequent stand-up special for Netflix in 2019, Aziz Ansari: Right Now, he focused on himself instead, saying: “There’s times I felt scared. There’s times I felt humiliated. There’s times I felt embarrassed. And ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way. And after a year or so, I just hope it was a step forward. It moved things forward for me and made me think about a lot. I hope I’ve become a better person.”
Master of None: Moments In Love, with five episodes total, premieres May 23, 2021, on Netflix.
