Is The World Ready For Aziz Ansari’s ‘Master Of None’ Season 3?

UPDATED 4/26/2021 AT 2:00 PM ET: Aziz Ansari shared the Master of None Season 2 premiere date, confirming the series will debut on Netflix May 23.

UPDATED 4/21/2021 AT 2:58 PM ET: The third season of Master of None will reportedly be titled Master of None Presents: Moments in Love. Per Variety, it will focus on Denise, the character played by Lena Waithe in Seasons 1 and 2. Ansari is still involved and reportedly directed all of the episodes.
When Netflix released their list of upcoming titles for the month of May, the third season of Aziz Ansari‘s comedy series Master of None was slotted into the streamer’s “Coming Soon” category, confirming reports that the show would soon return after a four-year hiatus. While Netflix didn’t confirm an official date for the Master of None season premiere, they did quietly slip the show into their “New on Netflix” video, where it blended in with titles like Army of the Dead and Lucifer.
With the return of Master of None, Ansari is stepping back into the spotlight after largely disappearing for a few years following sexual misconduct allegations. In 2018, a Babe.net author detailed a date with the comedian as “the worst night of my life,” describing an evening in which he “aggressively tried to pressure her into sexual acts” and ignored her cues, per The Cut.

As she detailed in the piece, the author texted Ansari after the incident, writing, “I just want to take this moment to make you aware of [your] behavior and how uneasy it made me,” to which he replied, “Clearly, I misread things in the moment and I’m truly sorry.” Still, the article sparked a debate amongst readers, with one side agreeing that Ansari was guilty of sexual misconduct and the other defending him and accusing the author of harming the #MeToo movement.

Although the discussion surrounding Ansari has since died down, it will no doubt re-emerge with the return of Master of None. The show marks the first major project Ansari will star in since 2018 — not counting his stand-up special, which also hit Netlix, Aziz Ansari: Right Now.

In the special, Ansari addresses the allegations at the very beginning of his set. “I felt so many things in the last year — there are times I felt scared, times I felt humiliated, times I felt embarrassed,” he says in the 2019 special. “And ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way. After a year or so, I just hope it was a step forward. It moved things forward for me, it made me think about a lot.”
Up until now, Netflix has stayed mum on the future of Master of None, but former head of original content Cindy Holland had suggested the show could continue on Netflix “when Aziz is ready.” But are viewers ready? Netflix appears to be betting on it. Master of None Season 3, which was filmed in London this past winter, is expected to drop on the streaming service in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for any updates on a specific premiere date, a trailer, and more.
