‘Wings of Fire’ on Netflix: Ava DuVernay To Adapt YA Fantasy Series About Dragons

Ava DuVernay is busy. Her Emmy wins and Oscar noms in tow, the noted filmmaker, writer, and producer will adapt author Tui T. Sutherland’s hit fantasy series Wings of Fire as an animated series for Netflix. Concerning the adventures of five young dragons, raised in secret to take on the mantle as saviors of the war-torn world of Pyrrhia, Sutherland’s YA novels would seem tailor-made for event status animated television, and DuVernay is here for it.

“Within this epic book series from the mind of Tui Sutherland is an elegant saga filled with wisdom and wonder, exploring ideas of belonging and bias, camaraderie and community,” DuVernay said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “On behalf of my colleagues Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes of Array Filmworks, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix and Warner Bros. Animation for this dynamic adaptation where five young dragonets fulfill their destiny and show viewers how to fulfill their own.”

DuVernay is no stranger to Netflix. Her Emmy-winning limited series When They See Us appeared on the streamer in 2019, and her Colin in Black & White, a dramatic series about the life of Colin Kaepernick, is forthcoming. But the Wings of Fire adaptation will be her first foray into animation. All of this is happening underneath the $100 million overall deal DuVernay signed with Warner Bros TV in 2018, a pact that primed her to develop projects across multiple platforms and in varying styles.

There’s no set release date for Wings Of Fire quite yet.
