Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Dies at 99

Prince Philip, the husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 99.

Early Friday morning, Buckingham Palace announced the news of the passing with a statement posted to the official palace website. The statement read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Prince Philip’s cause of death has not yet been announced. According to a report from CNN, the Duke was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London in February and was treated for an infection. He was then transferred to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, where he underwent heart surgery, and was then released last March.

Philip was married to Queen Elizabeth for over seven decades, after first meeting her when she was just 13 in 1934. From their wedding in 1947 until his retirement in 2017, he served in his role—making him the longest-serving consort of any British monarch, as well the longest-living male member of the royal family.

On the Netflix series The Crown, a historical drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, Philip has been played by actor Matt Smith for the first two seasons, and Tobias Menzies for seasons 3 and 4. Actor Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) has been cast to play Philip in The Crown Seasons 5 and 6.

The real Queen Elizabeth was reportedly upset at The Crown‘s portrayal of her husband in the first two seasons.

“The queen realizes that many who watch The Crown take it as an accurate portrayal of the royal family and she cannot change that,” a senior courtier told Express. “But I can convey that she was upset by the way Prince Philip is depicted as being a father insensitive to his son’s well-being. She was particularly annoyed at a scene in which Philip has no sympathy for a plainly upset Charles while he is flying him home from Scotland. That simply did not happen.”
