Listen. [Barenaked Ladies voice:] It’s been one week since Godzilla Vs. Kong came out, and it will be another two weeks before the Oscars. (Thanks, pandemic!) Film Twitter needs something to fight about, and whether Ridley Scott’s classic, Alien, is a horror movie was all people needed to start tearing each other apart.
It all started with a Twitter prompt, which simply read, “Settle an argument: is Alien a horror film? Give reasons why pls.” The tweet included a poll for Twitter users to vote “Yes” or “No.” At about 35,000 votes, with 94 percent voting “Yes,” it seemed the overwhelming consensus was: “Yes, Alien is a horror movie.”
For those who have been living under a rock and are unfamiliar with the plot of the film, it follows a seven-member crew returning to Earth in a spaceship who are terrorized, attacked, and killed by an alien life form. It is very scary and follows many classic horror movie tropes. While some might list “sci-fi” as the first genre they associate with Alien, rather than “horror,” it’s important to remember: None of this really matters.
But you didn’t think Film Twitter was going to leave it at that, did you?
Absolutely not. After the argument was made that “horror can’t be set in space,” the gloves came off.
That said, with every headache-inducing Film Twitter argument, there is a silver lining to be found in the goofs.
Anyways. If you really want to judge for yourself, you can rent or buy Alien on Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube, or wherever you like to rent or buy movies. At least we can all agree on one thing: Alien vs. Predator is a romantic comedy.
