‘Irresistible’ Gives Us the Emily Blunt/Susan Sarandon Sexy Fleetwood Mac Dance Scene We… Wanted…?

Deciding to watch one actor’s entire filmography will lead you into some interesting (understatement) corners of streaming. I’ve learned this in the last few months of my last  y e a r  in quarantine, as I rather casually decided to do something that’s possibly undoable unless I buy an Australian DVD player at some point: I decided to watch every movie and TV show Sam Neill has ever appeared in. Listen—the last year has been hellish, so you can’t blame me for wanting to spend a lot of time with my very first celebrity crush. This mission has led me to watch some truly bizarre movies (hello MindGamers), and it led me to watch the 2006 straight-to-DVD quasi-sexy thriller Irresistible.

Starring Susan Sarandon, Emily Blunt, and—of course—Sam Neill, Irresistible is exactly what it sounds like: it’s one of those relationship thrillers where one person (usually a woman, frequently a mistress, always someone jilted) snaps and decides to escalate situations to “but the cops won’t believe us!!” levels. These are movies with titles like Animosity, Unforgettable, Acrimony, Inconceivable—wow, I just checked and those are all actual movies except for Animosity. So, here’s Irresistible! Sarandon stars as a famous book illustrator and Neill’s her architect husband. If you’re like me and thought, “Yeah, makes sense” when I said I was watching every Sam Neill movie ever, then I’m sure you will agree with me that he is incredibly handsome in this movie.

And then there’s Emily Blunt, who plays an assistant at Sam’s architecture firm and wow does she have her sites set on Sam—or does she?!

I’m really trying to not say too much about Irresistible on the off chance that you decide to watch it because this movie is an absolute thrill ride of WTF choices, especially if you go in knowing nothing. In fact, I highly suggest you go in knowing nothing except that there is a reveal and a twist on that reveal that you won’t see coming for a while. Trying to figure it out ahead of time will just send your mind in spirals as the plot turns.

But to really sell you on this movie that you absolutely should watch while you whittle away the final hours of isolation before your vaccine kicks in, I will tell you that this movie involves a scene wherein Emily Blunt, in her quest to Single White Female and/or seduce Sarandon or Neill or both (?), gets Susan Sarandon tipsy on wine and flirtatiously dances with/at/on her to a generic cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies.”

I don’t know what’s more “huh?” inducing in this scene: Blunt’s Victoria’s Secret evening wear or the fact that all these office workers are absolutely turning it to one of Fleetwood Mac’s wispiest pop songs. “I Don’t Want to Know” or “Don’t Stop,” sure. Maybe. If the iPod has no actual hot jams to shuffle through. But “Little Lies”? Look at Susan Sarandon’s expression. She knows this is weird.

But things get weirder when the camera cuts to Blunt’s character’s husband, and then back to a simmering, intense Blunt.

Is she doing this to piss off her husband? Is she doing this to annoy Sam Neill? Does she just find the singles off of Tango in the Night deeply sensual? These are questions the movie—um, okay, I don’t think it answers any of these questions. These mysteries will haunt you.

But the dance is not done yet! In fact, Sarandon even gets kinda into it! Make that magic last for as long as Christine McVie’s singing and the wine is flowing.

It’s, top to bottom, the kinda scene I thought I’d live my entire life without seeing. How often do you watch one of the most bankable stars of today maliciously seduce one of the most decorated movie stars ever to one of Fleetwood Mac’s most “yeah, this is good” songs? Never—until now!

I won’t get into where this movie goes next or why it goes there or how it goes there, because this is far from the weirdest turn taken by Irresistible. But sharing this moment right here? Much like Emily Blunt in this scene, I just couldn’t help myself.
