‘Coming 2 America’ Tops Nielsen’s Weekly Movies Streaming Rankings

Coming 2 America has been crowned the top title on Nielsen‘s weekly streaming rankings. The Eddie Murphy movie sequel nabbed the No. 1 spot in the Top 10 list for the week of week of March 1 through March 7, when the film was first released on Prime Video.

According to Nielsen, Coming 2 America pulled in 1,413 million minutes in total, topping movies like Bigfoot Family, I Care A Lot, and Raya and the Last Dragon. The comedy leads the weekly rankings by a vast margin, with the other films on the list coming in at around 300 million minutes each in comparison.

Coming 2 America also pulled in more minutes than the champions on Nielsen’s other two lists. By comparison, the top Original was Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, which nabbed 1,161 million minutes for 10 episodes, followed by Disney+’s WandaVision, which got 924 million minutes for 9 episodes. On the Acquired list, Criminal Minds stole viewers’ eyeballs for 929 million minutes, and 307 episodes on Netflix.

While Nielsen has been releasing streaming data for a while now, Coming 2 America‘s numbers mark one of the first times a non-Netflix title has claimed the top spot in the researcher’s rankings. Back in January, The Mandalorian became the first Disney+ show to reach No. 1 in Nielsen streaming ratings, beating out comfort binge The Office and Netflix’s hit royal series, The Crown. HBO Max’s Wonder Woman 1984 and Disney+’s Soul also had the top spot on previous lists. However, this is the first time Amazon’s Prime Video has reigned supreme.

The Coming to America sequel picks up decades after the original film, with King Akeem (Murphy) married to Lisa Joffer (Shari Headley) and living in Zamunda with their three daughters. When Akeem discovers he has a son (Jermaine Fowler) back in Queens, he returns to the U.S. to find him in hopes of bringing him back to Zamunda as the heir to the throne. The film also stars original cast members Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos and Louie Anderson, plus new additions like Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan.

Amazon previously claimed Coming 2 America had a record-breaking release. Although they declined to provide specific numbers, they reported that the sequel was the “#1 streamed movie of the weekend,” “the #1 opening weekend of any other streaming movie in 2021 thus far,” and even the “#1 opening weekend of any streaming movie in the past 12 months,” per Slashfilm.

The film was originally set to hit theaters in August 2020, but was pushed to December and eventually snatched up by Amazon, who purchased Coming 2 America for $125 million.
