‘Outlander’ Renewed for Season 7 at Starz Ahead of Season 6 Debut

Hit drama series Outlander has been renewed for a seventh season at Starz. The Golden Globe-nominated series is currently in production on Season 6, which is expected to debut in late 2021 or early 2022.

Outlander Season 7 will consist of 12 episodes and draw from the seventh book in Diana Gabaldon’s international best selling novel franchise, An Echo in the Bone. Published in 2009, An Echo in the Bone is the penultimate novel in the eight-book series, although an additional book is forthcoming.

“Starz is committed to investing in unapologetic, bold premium storytelling that amplifies diverse voices and shines a spotlight on women in front of and behind the camera through our #TakeTheLead initiative,” said Christina Davis, President of Original Programming for Starz, in a statement. “The hit series Outlander embodies everything about our initiative including a powerful female lead character and an amazing team of storytellers. We look forward to following the adventures of Claire and Jamie in America during the Revolution as well as more time travel during this next season.”

“We are so excited Starz has given us the opportunity to continue the epic Outlander journey,” added showrunner Matthew B. Roberts. “We can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and start breaking Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story.”

Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe (Claire Randall Fraser), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser), Sophie Skelton (Brianna Randall), and Richard Rankin (Roger Wakefield) are all expected to return for the show’s seventh season. Roberts will continue to serve as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Andy Harries, and Jim Kohlberg, with Sony Pictures Television producing.

While fans will have to wait a while for new episodes of Outlander, Starz is delivering a taste of the beloved series in Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham. The eight-episode docuseries follows Heughan and co-star Graham McTavish as they travel throughout Scotland and explore the country’s heritage, culture, and food.

Much like Outlander, which averaged 6.7 multiplatform viewers per episode in Season 5, Men in Kilts has been a ratings hit for Starz. The docuseries’ series premiere on February 14 was the second-highest series premiere viewed on the Starz app and the No. 1 most social premium cable series across all live, new primetime episodes that day. Men in Kilts has also become a Top 3 series premiere on Starz since the beginning of 2020, with Outlander taking the No. 1 spot for regular premium scripted series among women viewers in 2020.
