Twitter Calls for ‘The Crown’ Spinoff Called ‘The Firm’

As it turns out, Netflix’s The Crown may be too sympathetic to the royal family. After baring their souls in an emotional, tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were asked about the award-winning Netflix series, which puts a dramatized spin on the monarchy’s scandals. Harry and Meghan were diplomatic about The Crown‘s take on their lives — yes, they’ve seen it — but that didn’t stop Twitter users from calling for a spinoff series about “the firm,” the target of many of the couple’s allegations. Your move, Netflix.
When the topic of The Crown — the most recent season of which showcased the fraught relationship between Harry’s parents, Prince Charles and Diana Spencer — came up during their Oprah interview, the royal couple offered few details about their relationship with the show. “I’ve watched some of it,” revealed Harry, to which Meghan agreed that she has also “watched some of it.”
And that was… it. The topic didn’t come up again, but the blip of a mention was enough to spur Twitter into action, and before long, users were demanding a spinoff series of The Crown about Harry and Meghan. “So, there’s gonna be a series called The Firm, right? Screening alongside The Crown?” wrote one user. “Tomorrow’s headline: Tyler Perry to produce The Crown spinoff, The Firm,” joked another viewer.

While I appreciate these viewers’ excitement, it’s pretty clear that The Crown IS about how the monarchy, as an institution, prevents the individuals within it from living their lives as they’d like. Over the past four seasons, we’ve seen this time and time again: first with Princess Margaret (played by Vanessa Kirby in Season 1) and Peter Townsend; later with Charles’ (played by Josh O’Connor in Seasons 3 and 4) attempt to chart his own course as the Prince of Wales; and, of course, with the Charles-Diana-Camilla love triangle dramatized in Season 4. In each of these cases, and in many others, “the firm” has dictated its members’ behavior, so it’s not exactly clear how a spinoff series would be different from The Crown itself.

That said, it’s going to be quite a while until The Crown Season 5 returns to Netflix, so any potential spinoff series are welcome. If we’re really talking spinoffs, though, might I suggest a prequel about Diana (Emma Corrin) and the roommates in her pre-Charles flat?
