Eddie Murphy Tells His Side of ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Prince Basketball Story

Chappelle’s Show has too many memorable sketches to count, but one that’s stood out over the years is Charlie Murphy’s story of playing an impromptu pickup basketball game with Prince back in the ’80s. If you’ve always wondered how true that story really is, Charlie’s younger brother Eddie Murphy is here to confirm the truth. Murphy, who stopped by The Tonight Show yesterday, called his late brother’s whacky tale “totally and absolutely accurate.”

In the famous “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories” sketch, the elder Murphy recounts a night out at the club with his friends and brother Eddie that later evolved into a basketball game against Prince with two teams: the “shirts,” Murphy and his friends, and the “blouses,” Prince and his crew. While Murphy’s story brought plenty of laughs when it aired on Chappelle’s Show, Eddie insists it’s all true — well, mostly. When host Jimmy Fallon asked if Prince really gave them outfits to play basketball in, he explained they still “had on stuff from the club” during the game. Meanwhile, Prince was outfitted in his “Kiss” video clothes.

“My brother was like, ‘Okay, it’s going to be shirts against blouses,'” Murphy told host Jimmy Fallon, per Entertainment Weekly. “The blouses won, they beat the shit out of us. We had one dude on our squad Larry who could play and he didn’t have no shoes so Prince gave him some sneakers. And Prince wore like two, three sizes smaller than Larry, but Larry was so excited to have Prince’s sneakers on, he put those tiny sneakers on his feet and he couldn’t do his game right,” he said. “So we lost. The one dude who could play, Prince’s shoes had him shutdown.”

During the rest of his Tonight Show segment, the Coming 2 America star recalled his interactions with legends from Richard Pryor, to Rodney Dangerfield to Muhammad Ali, his “hero.” Watch Murphy’s full Tonight Show interview below, and check out the Chappelle’s Show sketch in the video above.
