‘100 Foot Wave’: HBO to Chronicle Garrett McNamara’s Record-Breaking Quest in New Docuseries

Big wave surfer Garrett McNamara is getting the documentary treatment in HBO Sports’ 100 Foot Wave, a six-part series about his quest to conquer a record-breaking wave. Directed by award winning documentarian Chris Smith, 100 Foot Wave will capture McNamara’s decade-long odyssey to ride the epic waves in Nazaré, Portugal, a small fishing village that served as the backdrop for his historic surfs in 2011 and 2013.

100 Foot Wave is slated to premiere this spring on HBO. The six-part docuseries will be available to stream on HBO Max.

While 100 Foot Wave serves as something of a Garrett McNamara biography, the docuseries will also explore Nazaré’s shift from sleepy seaside village to preeminent big-wave surfing destination. “Over the course of six episodes, 100 Foot Wave interweaves the transformative story of the seaside village with McNamara and his peers’ ongoing search for the tallest wave on the planet,” reads HBO’s official description. “The series captures the common spirit and fearless passion shared by McNamara and big-wave surfers from across the world as they push themselves through life-altering injuries and tantalizing near-misses in their collective pursuit of the inconceivable. Spanning four continents, 100 Foot Wave is an inspirational story of a group of people on a quest to achieve new heights, and a town and a sport that were forever changed by one seemingly impossible dream.”

Smith is no stranger to the world of high-profile documentaries. Most notably, Smith directed FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, which provided a year’s worth of memes when it debuted on Netflix in early 2019. The 100 Foot Wave director also served as an executive producer on 2020 smash hit Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, another Netflix success story.

100 Foot Wave is produced by First Look Media’s Topic Studios, Library Films, and Amplify Pictures. Chris Smith serves as director and executive producer, with Joe Lewis, Maria Zuckerman, Ryan Heller, and Michael Bloom also executive producing.
