The Golden Globes are by no means a perfect awards show, but this year, it seems like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association got more wrong than they got right — especially when it comes to drama series I May Destroy You. Created, co-directed, and starring British actress Michaela Coel, I May Destroy You follows a young woman named Arabella who attempts to build her life after being raped. As this description suggests, Coel’s series is by no means easy to stream, but its searing take on trauma made it one of the most important shows of the year, if not the decade.
Unfortunately, in a shocking snub, I May Destroy You was completely shut out of the Golden Globe nominations, prompting outrage from fans, critics, and even nominated writers. However, if there’s one good thing to come of the debacle, it’s that it has sparked renewed interest in Coel’s series, and now, fans are desperate to know where they can stream (or re-watch) this moving drama. I MAY DESTROY YOU GOLDEN GLOBES SNUB, EXPLAINED
As Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe explained in her breakdown of the biggest snubs and surprises from the 2021 Golden Globe nominations, shutting out I May Destroy You is “a miss for the Globes.” Not only does the series provide some much-needed representation; it also was “a masterpiece, looking at the effects of trauma on the psyche and the struggles of being a young Black artist in 2020.” Added O’Keefe, “Tricky, troubling, and even hilariously absurd, I May Destroy You was unlike anything else on TV…ever.”
Of course, we won’t ever be able to truly explain why the HFPA shut out this masterful series, but we sure can complain about it.
