‘Master of None’ Reportedly Returning to Netflix for Season 3

Aziz Ansari‘s series Master of None is reportedly returning for Season 3 on Netflix, according to Collider. After almost four years since the last season, the dramedy is coming back with new episodes, a different location, and a fresh storyline, as reported by UK outlet Chortle, which first broke the news.

Master of None Season 3 will reportedly take place in London, after two seasons set in New York City and Italy. Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) is rumored to be joining the cast as Dev’s (Ansari) new love interest, which means he’s likely moved on from his relationship with Francesca (Alessandra Mastronardi) after the Season 2 finale. According to Chortle, Ansari and his co-creator Alan Yang began filming new episodes of Master of None as early as last spring, but had to halt production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

News of more Master of None comes as a bit of a surprise after the show’s years-long hiatus following Season 2, which was released in 2017. While the show earned critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series, the future of Master of None was left uncertain after Ansari stepped away from the spotlight following a 2018 allegation of sexual misconduct as detailed in a Babe.net article.

Ansari faced plenty of backlash for the story, in which the writer called her date with the comedian “the worst night of my life.”  Despite the public outcry, Netflix’s former head of original content Cindy Holland maintained her support for Ansari and said that Netflix would welcome another season of his show “when Aziz is ready.”

When he did return to Netflix over a year later, it wasn’t with more Master of None, but with a Netflix special titled Aziz Ansari: Right Now, in which he addresses the “whole situation” right at the start of his show. “I felt so many things in the last year — there are times I felt scared, times I felt humiliated, times I felt embarrassed,” Ansari says in the special. “And ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way. After a year or so, I just hope it was a step forward. It moved things forward for me, it made me think about a lot.”

Netflix has not yet confirmed the reports of Master of None Season 3, but Collider reports that Lena Waithe will return, and it’s likely Eric Wareheim and Kelvin Yu will reprise their roles, too. We’ll keep you updated with more news or confirmation on Season 3, so keep checking back for an official release date, trailer and more.
