Ethan Hawke Reportedly Joins Disney+ ‘Moon Knight’ Series

Welcome to the Marvel Universe, Ethan Hawke. The Boyhood star is reportedly joining the MCU for his latest role as a villain in the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hawke, whose official role hasn’t yet been announced, is set to star in the series alongside Oscar Isaac, who will reportedly play Marc Spector, the show’s hero.

While we don’t have specific details about Hawke’s upcoming role, the Hollywood Reporter notes that Moon Knight faces off in the comics against an enemy named Bushman, “a fellow mercenary who turned on the hero when Egyptian gold came into the picture.”

Moon Knight, which was first announced back in 2019, follows Marc Spector, a mercenary who struck a deal with Egyptian god Khonshu while on his deathbed. As part of the pact, Marc agrees to embody Khonsu’s spirit in exchange for his life. And so he becomes Moon Knight, an identity-shifting vigilante who’s been a part of the Marvel crew since his creation in 1975.

News of Isaac’s Moon Knight casting broke in October, marking his latest starring role after major film appearances as Poe Dameron in Star Wars and Apocalypse in X-Men: ApocalypseMoon Knight marks his latest Marvel project since his role in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in which he voiced Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099.

Hawke’s Moon Knight role comes not long after his return to TV with The Good Lord Bird, his Showtime series about abolitionist John Brown. The Oscar-nominee’s upcoming projects include films Tonight at Noon, The Guilty and The Northman.

Moon Knight comes from writer Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy) and directors Mohamed Diab, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead. The series isn’t set to premiere on Disney+ until 2022, but there’s plenty more to Marvel coming to the streaming service later this year, between the premiere of WandaVision and upcoming projects like Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki.
