Netflix’s ‘Three-Body Problem’ Producer Poisoned in Alleged Murder Plot

A producer on Netflix‘s upcoming adaptation of The Three-Body Problem has reportedly been targeted in a murder plot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lin Qi, Chairman and CEO of Chinese game developer Yoozoo and Three-Body Problem executive producer, has been hospitalized after an attempted poisoning, and his colleague, a man identified by the surname Xu, has been identified as a key suspect in the case.

Xu, who has been named Yoozoo senior executive Xu Yao by Chinese media outlets, allegedly poisoned Lin with a cup of pu-erh tea following “a dispute among the Chinese entertainment company’s executive ranks.” Lin, who was admitted to the hospital Dec. 16, is said to be in stable condition since the poisoning attempt.

Yesterday, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau posted a statement regarding the investigation on its official Weibo account. “At 5pm on Dec 17, 2020, the police received a call from a hospital regarding a patient surnamed Lin. During the patient’s treatment, the hospital said it had determined that the patient had been poisoned,” they shared. “Following the call, the police began an investigation. According to investigations on site and further interviews, the police found that a suspect surnamed Xu, who is a coworker of the victim Lin, was the most likely the perpetrator. The suspect Xu has been arrested and investigations continue.”

Earlier this year, news broke that Netflix had acquired the rights to create an English language adaptation of the wildly popular “Three Body Problem” book series from author Liu Cixin, which won the Hugo Award in 2015 and became an international bestseller. Netflix secured the rights from the Yoozoo Group and subsidiary Three-Body Universe, who had acquired the rights to the properties previously.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are set to produce the series alongside Lin, with Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy) joining as showrunner. The Three-Body Problem also lists Rian Johnson, Rosamund Pike and Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company as executive producers.
