Is ‘False Flag’ On Hulu Based On A True Story?

The series False Flag (original title in Hebrew: כפולים‎) is a story about five ordinary Israelis who wake up one morning to find out that their names, faces, and personal information have been publicized around the world via the media based on suspicions that they are involved in a high-profile kidnapping. It is currently streaming on Hulu. The show is directed by Oded Ruskin and stars Ishai Golan, Maggie Azarzar, Angel Bonanni, Ania Bukstein and Orna Salinger. It was created for Keshet International by Maria Feldman and Amit Cohen and was acquired by Fox International who cut a deal with Hulu to stream the show, which ran for two seasons on Israeli television.

The intense story feels so real at times that you might begin to wonder if it’s based on a true story. The popular Israeli thriller has clearly garnered international attention, premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in February. So, did the controversial events of False Flag seriously happen IRL? Here’s everything you need to know about False Flag:

Is False Flag based on a true story? What is False Flag based on?

Well, it’s not that straightforward: False Flag is partly based on a true story and does touch on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East. While the series is loosely based on the 2010 assassination of a senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai, names and characters have been altered for the series. al-Mabhouh was the co-founder of a military wing of the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas.

Should you Stream or Skip watching False Flag on Hulu?

This writer would say YES, stream it, solely based on the international attention that the popular thriller series has drawn. Apple TV+ has already ordered an American remake-of-sorts of the series titled Suspicion starring Uma Thurman, who will portray a powerful businesswoman in a variation of the upcoming series from The Man in the High Castle producer Rob Williams. It will center on four British citizens staying in a swanky New York hotel and from what we know now, strays from mentioning anything about Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
