Jim Henson’s ‘Dinosaurs’ Is Finally Coming to Disney+ in January

Jim Henson classic Dinosaurs will stream on Disney+ in its entirety on January 29, Collider reports. The 1990s puppet show previously streamed on Hulu, but executive producer Brian Henson, Jim’s son, is hopeful that the sitcom will “find a bigger and new audience” on Disney’s namesake streaming service.

In an interview with Collider, Brian Henson, the current chairman of The Jim Henson Company, revealed that all four season of Dinosaurs will be available to stream on Disney+ late next month. “Up until pretty recently it was on Hulu and it has had quite a following on Hulu,” he explained. “I think the audience will more easily find it on Disney+, which is terrific. It sits very well on Disney+. When they were divvying up what goes where, they eventually decided Dinosaurs should be over on Disney+.”

Dinosaurs originally aired on ABC from 1991 to 1994. The puppet sitcom followed the Sinclairs, a family of dinosaurs in 60,000,003 BC Pangaea, as they navigated the everyday ups and downs of dinosaur life. The Sinclairs often gathered around the television to watch their favorite shows, and much like Insecure or Dear White People, the Henson series featured scenes from these fictional programs.

Over the summer, one such scene, from a fake show called TriCera Cops, went viral for its depiction of “marxist cops” (the dinosaurs explained systemic racism and socioeconomic disparities to one another), a storyline that seemed particularly timely in the wake of George Floyd’s death. At the time, fans had to rent or purchase the Dinosaurs episode to see the bit in full, but come January 29, they’ll be stream the anti-establishment sitcom to their heart’s content on Disney+.

“We were ahead of our time, I guess. But we were pulling a lot of our themes from All in the Family, which was years and years before us. And even The Honeymooners before that,” Brian Henson told Decider. “Yes, we were ahead of our time but isn’t it sad that we were having the same issues, not only decade after decade, but generation after generation. It’s sad.”
