Steve Carell’s ‘Space Force’ Renewed for Season 2

Space Force has landed itself a second season. The Steve Carell comedy has been officially renewed at Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Filming on Season 2 is set to begin next year, but an official premiere date hasn’t yet been announced.

In an effort to reduce the show’s budget, Netflix will switch filming locations from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and the series is planning a “creative revamp.” Space Force has recruited Norm Hiscock as co-showrunner alongside Greg Daniels. Hiscock has previously worked on shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation, People of Earth and King of the Hill. Jimmy O. Yang is also joining the show’s writing staff.

According to sources, Netflix is hoping Season 2 will “allow Space Force the runway to grow creatively and better connect with viewers and critics alike much in the same way The Office broke out in its subsequent season.” Space Force premiered in May to mixed reviews.

Decider’s Joel Keller admitted that the idea of another Carell comedy on the streamer was a “slam dunk,” but panned the show for its “laugh-free” first episide. “It pains us to say this about Space Force given Carell’s and Daniels’ involvement and the amazing cast,” he wrote. “But we were looking for a sharp satire, not just a workplace comedy that’s feels more silly than sharp.”
