Matthew Morrison to Star in NBC’s ‘The Grinch Musical!’

Matthew Morrison is getting into the holiday spirit! Or rather, he’ll be trying to convince others to snap out of it in his latest role. The Glee star is set to portray the grumpy green Christmas villain The Grinch in NBC’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical!, TV Line reports. The theatrical production will debut on the network just in time for the holiday season on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 8/7c.

While NBC has staged live musicals in the past, The Grinch Musical! will be filmed prior to its premiere at London’s Troubadour Theatre, and the two-hour show will later air on TV.

“Dr. Seuss is an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re thrilled to bring a stage production of The Grinch Musical! to our audience,” said Doug Vaughan, executive vice president of special programs at NBC. “This is a perfect addition to our annual holiday program traditions and a telecast the entire family will enjoy.”

Morrison added, “In what has been an extremely challenging year for us all, it is an honor to bring some holiday cheer into viewers’ homes this December. My wish is to bring some Who-ville magic to this holiday season and, while the pandemic presents some challenges in bringing a stage production to life, we are excited to present a unique version of this seasonal favorite in a new creative and imaginative way.”

Here’s what else you may have missed today:

The Outsider is done after only one season on HBO, Collider reports. The drama, which is based on a Stephen King novel of the same name, first premiered earlier this year, and although plans were already underway for Season 2, the show was officially canceled. The Outsider, which tells the story of an investigation into a young boy’s murder, stars Cynthia Erivo, Ben Mendelson, Jason Bateman, and more. It may not be the end for the series, though. The Outsider is reportedly being shopped around to other outlets for a possible Season 2.

NBC has nabbed a Canadian drama for its American audiences. The network has added the medical drama Nurses to its primetime lineup, Variety reports. The show, which is filmed and set in Toronto, follows five nurses working at a busy hospital who balance helping their patients with caring for themselves. Nurses, which stars Tiera Skovbye, Natasha Calis, Jordan Johnson-Hinds, Sandy Sidhu, and Donald MacLean Jr., first premiered earlier this year on Global TV and has already wrapped Season 2. Expect to see the medical drama on NBC starting preview episodes Monday, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 at 10/9c. The show will move to a Tuesday time slot in January.
