From 'The Holiday' to 'Holidate': 5 Christmas Movies to Watch on Valentine's Day
Holidate has officially claimed the number one spot for most-watched movies on Netflix currently, and it’s no surprise why. The Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey comedy is full of laughs and charm, telling the story of two perpetual singles who team up to take on the holidays, but get much more than they anticipated out of their fake “relationship.”
When Sloane (Roberts) gets fed up with her family’s constant questions about her love life, she meets Jackson (Bracey), who is also single for the season, just in time, running into him in a chance encounter in the mall. The two decide to accompany each other to the next holiday, New Years Eve, and spark up a tradition that takes them all the way to next Thanksgiving.
Decider’s Brett White praised the film for its original take on the rom-com, and for its festive and feisty jokes. “Holidate proves that Netflix can do way more than just bang out the kind of fluffy Christmas comedies you see on cable,” he writes in his Holidate review. “Let this warts-and-all romantic comedy be the start of a new Netflix tradition.”

Netflix delivered another charming rom-com earlier this year with the original movie Love, Wedding, Repeat. The film stars Oliva Munn as Dina, a guest at a wedding that seems to be stuck in a time warp. Alternate versions of the day take place as Jack (Sam Claflin) tries to woo Dina back after meeting her on a trip to Italy. But while he’s trying to make sparks fly again, he also has to manage his little sister’s wedding, which seems to be unraveling with every new reality.
'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past'
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, a 2009 rom-com, is another pick like Holidate that you can queue up on Netflix this very minute. The Mark Waters movie follows Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey), a womanizing photographer who gets some unexpected visitors the night before his brother’s wedding. Connor is visited by the ghosts of many of his past lovers, who take him back to moments in his dating past, present, and future.
'Desperados'
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Nasim Pedrad leads Netflix’s original rom-com, Desperados. She stars as Wesley, a woman who travels to Mexico to save her new relationship after sending a scathing email. Wesley, who thinks her new match Jared (Robbie Amell) didn’t answer her after they hooked up, later finds out he got into a car accident, but it’s too late and she’s already sent her message. So, to make things right and delete the message before Jared sees it, she travels south of the border, bringing her best girlfriends along for the adventure.
'Set It Up'
2018’s Set It Up brings romance to the workplace, telling the story of two assistants who hatch a plan to get their bosses together. Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) meet up one night while ordering dinner for their bosses and come up with the idea to set the two up so they can finally have some peace, and some much-needed time off. And while the overworked PAs weren’t plotting to find love of their own, Harper and Charlie find themselves catching feelings, too.
'Always Be My Maybe'
Ali Wong and Randall Park star in Always Be My Maybe, an excellent rom-com that dropped on Netflix last summer. The movie follows childhood sweethearts Shasha (Wong) and Marcus (Park), who meet again by chance as adults after going years without speaking to each other. Although they lead entirely different lives than they did in high school, their connection remains, and they can’t deny the sparks between them. And as if you needed one more reason to stream Always Be My Maybe, the film has a memorable and hilarious Keanu Reeves cameo that shouldn’t be missed.
'Someone Great'
When Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) is dumped by her boyfriend Nate (Lakeith Stanfield), she relies on her two best friends to pick her up. Someone Great tells the story of their final New York City adventure before Jenny leaves for her new job with Rolling Stone in San Francisco. While she’s trying to process her breakup, Jenny and her friends embark on a girls night out, trading the rom-com tropes for a story of female friendship.
'Love, Guaranteed'
Love, Guaranteed tells the story of a man scorned by dating apps, but it has a sweet, happy ending. We won’t spoil it for you, but we will tell you this: Damon Wayans Jr. stars as Nick, a single guy who hires lawyer Susan (Rachel Leigh Cook) to help him win a case against an app after he strikes out despite going on 1,000 dates. As the two get to know each other, they find that their bond is much stronger than any regular working relationship, and Nick just may find love after all.
