Binge This: ‘Ballers’ Star London Brown Recommends ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Martin’

London Brown is tossing a streaming recommendation your way. The actor is currently starring in Tales from the Hood 3 on Syfy, which is executive produced by Spike Lee. Along with his new film, Brown is best known for his performance in HBO’s comedy-drama Ballers. He plays the antagonist in Ballers, Reggie, who often has rifts with most of the main athletes in the series — he’s someone you love to hate.

The first show on the docket is Ballers — Brown recommends you watch his performance as Reggie. The HBO series features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a starring role, playing a retired NFL defensive end turned financial manager. Ballers follows the lives of current and former NFL players —which aren’t as dazzling as they may seem. The show debuted its finale last year, and all five seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.

“I still haven’t watched the show,” Brown confesses. “I’m on the show, and I ain’t watched it! That’s because right now, I’ve been binge-watching one of my favorite shows: Hell’s Kitchen.”

Clearly, either after or before you watch Ballers, Brown suggests you check out Gordon Ramsay’s hit kitchen competition series Hell’s Kitchen. The show, which has been running for 15 years now, follows Ramsay’s fiendish quest to find a head chef. Seasoned cooks battle it out in intense dinner services, slowly getting picked off until one pro remains.

“I like the show because, one, I learn,” says Brown. “My cooking skills — I’m taking it up another level! I know some more terms, I know how to baste the chicken. I know how to get down.”

The best parts are Ramsay’s insults, according to Brown. In one of his favorite scenes, the angered British chef grabs two slices of bread and places them on a contestant’s head: an idiot sandwich. If you want more cooking-related insults, Hell’s Kitchen is available to stream for free on Peacock.

Once you’re all cooked-out, Brown recommends checking out Martin. The sitcom is a classic 90s hit following Martin Payne (Martin Lawrence), a wisecracking comedian at a radio show he hosts with his girlfriend Gina (Tisha Campbell). “I don’t even know to call it binge-watching, because if you’re Black, Martin’s just part of what we do,” says Brown. “Brush your teeth, take a shower. Watch Martin, pay your bills. Go drop your kids.”

Brown loves the sense of humor of the series, which ran for five seasons on Fox and was one of the network’s highest-rated shows at the time. Every episode of Martin is available to stream on FuboTV.

“I get to learn something, and I get to laugh,” Brown says. “Can’t go wrong with those! Boom.”
