Shonda Rhimes Shows Coming to Netflix: What We Know

Two years ago Shonda Rhimes made an announcement that would shake the television industry to its core, switching from her longtime home at ABC to go to Netflix. And this year we’re finally about to see the fruit of that labor.

In the coming months Netflix will premiere not one but two Shonda Rhimes projects. Wondering what Shondaland content you have in your future? Worried about what’s going to happen to your favorite ABC shows? Here’s everything you need to know about Rhimes’ deal with Netflix on the eve of her new TV chapter.

What Shonda Rhimes’ Netflix Shows Are Coming Out?

The highest paid showrunner on television is about to drop some serious bombs. There are a total of 12 Shondaland projects currently in development. Next month will see the premiere of Rhimes’ first project for Netflix, a documentary about renowned actress, singer, and philanthropist Debbie Allen. Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker is set to premiere on November 27. It will be followed in December by Bridgerton, a period piece inspired by the romance novels of the same name. That drama is set to premiere on December 25.

Though we don’t know when they’ll premiere, we know a few details about the other 12 reported projects. Rhimes has committed to adapting Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s first book, The Warmth of Other Suns. She’s also set to write and direct a film version of Recursion, the popular sci-fi and romance book series. The super producer also has an anthology series in the works, Notes on Love, and is hoping to to adapt the memoir of her longtime star Ellen Pao with Reset. It’s also been reported that Rhimes will produce The Residence, a series based on Kate Andersen Brower’s 2016 nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.

But Rhimes’ most anticipated show is the upcoming limited series Inventing Anna. The drama will adapt the true story of how Anna Sorokin, also known as Anna Delvey, was able to fool the New York socialite scene and con former friends out of thousands.

What Is Shonda Rhimes’ Netflix Deal?

For years Rhimes called ABC her home as she revolutionized television. That changed in 2018 when the mega creator moved over to Netflix. Under Rhimes’ nine-figure deal all of her new projects will be going to Netflix. Her shows created before the deal, like Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, will continue to air on ABC. Much like with Ryan Murphy’s deal, Rhimes and her Shondaland producers are still creating new seasons of these ABC series.

Rhimes has maintained that she left ABC for Netflix so that she can have more creative freedom. Since having more Shonda Rhimes around is always amazing, that’s a really good thing.

What Shonda Rhimes Shows Are on Netflix?

At the moment Netflix only has a handful of Shonda Rhimes shows. But it does have the ones that matter most. Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and How to Get Away with Murder are all available on Netflix. Considering Netflix revealed Grey’s has logged the most viewing hours of any show on Netflix, that’s likely not going to change anytime soon.

If you want to stream more of Rhimes’ work, Scandal and Station 19 are both streaming on Hulu. Also, Off the Map is available to stream on ABC’s site. Unfortunately that’s where streaming subscriptions stop being helpful. For the People, Still Star-Crossed, and The Catch are currently only available through digital rental or purchase.

Will Shonda Rhimes Continue to Work for ABC?

Don’t worry. Just because Rhimes is killing it at Netflix that doesn’t mean Grey’s is in jeopardy. Under her new deal Shondaland will continue to produce new episodes and seasons of Rhimes’ shows that were created before her switch to Netflix. Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 are safe.
