‘The Crown’ Season 4 Teaser is Anything But a Fairytale

The Crown Season 4 may feature Charles and Diana’s wedding, but the royal affair is anything but a fairytale. Netflix has released an ominous new trailer for the forthcoming season, which seems to be a good deal darker than previous installments. As Charles’ wedding looms, tensions amid the royal family are running high, and it’s only a matter of time before things come to a head.

In Season 3, The Crown introduced viewers to the adult Charles (Josh O’Connor), and in the new batch of episodes, the young royal will have much larger problems than Welsh criticism. Much of The Crown Season 4 will center on Charles’ courtship of Lady Diana Spencer, played by newcomer Emma Corrin, and their 1981 wedding, an affair that set the standard for all royal weddings to come.

However, Netflix’s new trailer suggests that Charles and Diana’s nuptials are creating quite a lot of friction among the royal family, which is dealing with its own challenges and renewed anti-monarchy sentiment amid Margaret Thatcher’s (Gillian Anderson) premiership. “Fairytales usually end, at this point, with the simple phrase, ‘They lived happily ever after,'” cautions the trailer’s narrator, as scenes of Charles yelling, Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) contemplating poolside, and Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) shooting daggers at anyone in her sight line flash on screen. “As husband and wife live out their vows, loving and cherishing one another, sharing life’s splendors and miseries, achievements and setbacks, they will be transformed in the process.”

Of course, we know how this story ends: Charles and Diana ultimately separated in 1992 and went through a lengthy public divorce before her tragic death in 1997. While The Crown Season 4 won’t tackle these storylines (that will likely come in Seasons 5 and 6), the trailer suggests that the forthcoming installment will plant seeds of discord that continue well into the years to come.

The Crown Season 4 premieres November 15. Watch the official teaser above.
