‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Reveals First, Action Packed Scene From Season 3

As just revealed at New York Comic Con’s virtual Enter the Metaverse Star Trek Universe panel, you won’t have to wait until next Thursday, October 15 to watch the opening scene from Star Trek: Discovery Season 3… It’s online, for your viewing pleasure, right now.

In the action packed opening minutes, we get a glimpse of new character Cleveland “Book” Booker, played by Supergirl vet David Ajala. As the scene plays out, Book is flying his way Han Solo style through a star-field crowded with spaceship debris.

“Book, you sonofabitch,” says the alien named Cosmo, who can say that because Star Trek: Discovery is on streaming service CBS All Access instead of network TV (though Discovery will begin airing its first season on CBS later this month). As Book as Cosmo spar, it becomes clear that the former has stolen something from the latter, and Cosmo wants whatever it is back at all costs.

And if all of this looks very un-Star Trek-y? That’s sort of the point. The weird tech and view-screens are there because Book is 930 years in the future, at least compared to where we left the crew of Discovery in Season 2. Don’t worry, though, at least one of them shows up shortly, thanks to a space-time anomaly. That crew-member would be none other than Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who slapped on a time suit in Season 2 and blasted through a wormhole in order to save the universe from a vicious Artificial Intelligence focused on destroying all carbon based lifeforms.

Literally crashing into Book’s ship, Burnham and the rogue captain end up plummeting to a planet below. Though we don’t get to see what happens to Book, the perspective shifts to Burnham’s out-of-control time suit, which is losing power and navigation as she rockets towards the planet’s surface. Though the clip does cut out before she crashes, given Burnham is the star of the show, we think she’s gonna be okay. Book, also, is probably okay, mostly given otherwise surviving for two minutes at the beginning of a season would be a weird intro for a big, new character.

Naturally, as this is the opening minutes (and also, just for what it’s worth, this isn’t actually the opening minutes of the episode — there’s something else that happens before this, insert eyeballs emoji here) of the episode, it opens a lot of questions beyond the survival of Burnham and Book. Where is the Discovery? And is this planet Terralysium, the tech free world Burnham’s mother had previously made her home base while fighting back against the AI?

For those answers, you’ll need to tune in to the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 on Thursday, October 15.
