HBO fans, you’re in luck: the first episode of new drama Lovecraft Country is now available to stream for free. The supernatural horror series is currently available to stream for free on HBO.com, HBOMax.com, and YouTube, but if you like the first episode, you’ll have to sign up for a subscription to continue watching. Based on Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he travels across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Atticus is joined by his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), but their search and rescue mission quickly turns into a struggle for survival when they come face to face with the racism of white America and a series of monstrous supernatural creatures.
The first episode of Lovecraft Country, “Sundown,” aired on Sunday, August 16, and it has already proven to be a big hit for HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the horror-thriller drew 760,000 live viewers, with the total growing to 1.4 million with replays and streaming.
Lovecraft Country‘s night one ratings are similar to those of another HBO juggernaut, Watchmen, which brought in 1.5 million viewers across various platforms when it debuted in October 2019. In both cases, streaming figures made up almost half of total viewership: 46% of Lovecraft Country night one viewers came in via streaming platforms, compared with 47% of Watchmen viewers.
And like Watchmen, Lovecraft Country boasts some serious talent on screen. In addition to Majors, Smollett, and Vance, the HBO series features Tony Goldwyn, Aunjanue Ellis, Abbey Lee, and more stars. Behind the scenes, Lovecraft Country is executive produced by Misha Green, J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange, Daniel Sackheim, and David Knoller. The series is produced by afemme, Inc., Bad Robot Productions, and Monkeypaw Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
