Daniel Dae Kim, Randall Park to Star in Asian-American Heist Movie for Amazon

Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park are teaming up for their very own action movie. After starring together in 2019’s Always Be My Maybe, the two actors are joining forces again to create an Asian-American heist film for Amazon Studios, Deadline reports.

The untitled project comes from Young Il Kim, who’s previously worked on Billions and also wrote 2016’s Rodham Hillary Clinton biopic. While multiple studios and streamers were interested in the film, Amazon outbid them all to secure the project.

A formal plot hasn’t been revealed yet, but we do know a little bit about what to expect from the storyline. The film follows a group of high school friends who reunite years later for an epic heist. Kim, Park and John Cheng, Head of Development at Kim’s 3AD production company, came up with the idea, and the trio will also produce the upcoming project.

“I think it has nods to Ocean’s Eleven, The Full Monty as well as Better Luck Tomorrow,” Kim told Deadline, adding, “It’s a story that kind of highlights community, friendship, unity in a very familiar genre that people I think will enjoy.”

Park and Kim are set to lead the film, which will include a main cast made up mostly of Asian-American actors. Kim told the outlet that seeing a bidding war for his film was a promising sign that Hollywood is looking for more diverse projects after the success of films like Crazy Rich Asians, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Parasite. “There is an appetite to see this kind of a movie with an Asian American cast and that is a really promising sign of the times,” he said.

Over the course of his career, Kim has starred in TV series like Lost, The Good Doctor and Hawaii Five-0, as well as films like Spider-Man 2, Insurgent and Hellboy. He’s set to star alongside Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette in his most recent project, Stowaway.

Park is known for his role on the ABC sitcom Fresh Off The Boat, which he starred in for five years alongside Constance Wu. He’s also appeared in shows like Veep, Drunk History and BoJack Horseman, and will star as Jimmy Woo in Marvel’s WandaVision TV series.
