‘Clueless’ TV Series Lands at Peacock

The long-awaited Clueless reboot is fully under way, and it finally found a streaming home. We’re totally buggin’! The project, which was first announced by Deadline last October, has officially landed on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Variety reports.

The reboot pulls the 90s crew into the 21st century, and this time, Cher’s best friend Dionne is the star of the show. The comedy series, which comes from writers Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace), is described as “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend?”

Amy Heckerling‘s original Clueless film premiered in 1995, starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher, Stacey Dash as Dionne, Brittany Murphy as Tai and Paul Rudd as Josh. The movie, which is a twist on Jane Austen’s “Emma” novel, follows Cher, the most popular girl at her Beverly Hills High School, and her best friend, Dionne. Together, the two decide to give a makeover the klutzy new girl Tai and secure her a boyfriend, but their efforts are so successful that Tai becomes more popular than either of them. Cher, on the search for a boyfriend of her own, soon realizes she’s in love with her former step-brother, Josh.

The news of the reboot comes not long after Clueless celebrated its 25 year anniversary last month. Over the past two decades, the film has inspired a couple of other spinoffs. Another TV series staring Rachel Blanchard as Cher and Dash back in her role as Dionne aired on ABC, and later UPN, between 1996 and 1999. More recently, the cult classic film headed Off-Broadway in 2018 with “Clueless: The Musical,” a stage adaptation starring Descendants actress Dove Cameron as Cher.
