Keke Palmer to Play Teen Activist on ‘The Proud Family’ Reboot

Welcome to The Proud Family, Keke Palmer! The actress has officially been added to the upcoming Disney+ reboot, titled The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Vulture reports.

Disney+ revealed the news today on Twitter, sharing an image of Palmer’s teen activist character, who is new to the series and did not appear on the original Disney Channel show. “There’s a new girl coming to town!,” they wrote. “Prepare to fall in love with 14-year-old activist Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, voiced by @KekePalmer, from the upcoming Original Series, #TheProudFamily: #LouderAndProuder, coming soon to #DisneyPlus.”

Palmer retweeted Disney+ with her own message of excitement. “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ DREAMS COME TRUE!” she wrote. Playing Maya will be a return to Palmer’s roots on Disney. In 2007, she starred alongside High School Musical actor Corbin Blue in the Disney Channel original movie Jump In. Not long after her Disney appearance, she switched over to Nickelodeon, where she led her own TV series, True Jackson, VP.

The Proud Family originally aired on Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005. The animated series follows the family of Penny Proud, a 14-year-old girl growing up and facing the challenges of being a teenager — but she’s lucky to have plenty of help from her parents, Trudy and Oscar, and her grandma, Sugar Mama.

Disney+ first announced the Proud Family rebootProud Family: Louder and Prouder in February. The new series will have the same producer as the original, Ralph Farquhar, and multiple cast members are returning to reprise their roles. Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama), Karen Malina White (Dijonay Jones), Soleil Moon Frye (Zoey Howzer), and Alisa Reyes (Penny’s rival LaCienega Boulevardez) are all coming back for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.

The Disney+ reboot series does not have an official premiere date, but the streaming service promises it’s “coming soon,” so we’ll keep you posted.
