‘Muppets Now’ Proves Its Time for a Full ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Crossover

There are precisely two things bringing me joy right now: nonstop Drag Race content, and the Muppets. That’s it, that’s all I need in order to take my mind off of reality—a reality with all the charm and appeal of a bombed-out Kmart. I got to enjoy the best seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Drag Race All Stars in a minute, and I get new episodes of Canada’s Drag Race every week. And now I can add new episodes of Muppets Now on Disney+ every Friday—including the season premiere, which features RuPaul! I’m all set, America.

Except… I’m not. I’m greedy. Five months in quarantine has made me feisty, and I’m here to ask—nay, demand more from my current reigning pop culture franchises: I demand a crossover. I want to see the Muppets on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13! Does anyone actually know when that season will be filmed? No! America is still in foolish denial about this pandemic and California is a literal hotbed of COVID (over 10,000 new cases on July 29—WTF?!). I don’t want Drag Race in front of cameras anytime soon, not even if they made every single runway category variations on “I’d like to keep it on, please.” Apocalyptic digression aside—whenever the time is right, we need the Muppets and Drag Race to come together.

And Disney—don’t act like I’m nuts for bringing this up, either! Y’all put RuPaul in a segment in the very first episode of Muppets Now. How was I supposed to leave that hilarical sit-down with Kermit and the whole Muppets crew wanting anything less than a full-on crossover?

Fellow Drag Race fans, the kind that keep seasons of the show playing on a constant loop while in quarantine and before, know the truth: that was the most fun Mama Ru has had on TV in a long time. Seriously—when was the last time you saw unflappable RuPaul filled with that much childlike wonder? The Muppets brought out a playful side of the drag legend—a playful side usually reserved for Ru’s love of Miss Vanjie’s love of her own drag name.

I also have to point out that Gonzo—the Muppets’ resident stunt queen—loved working with RuPaul too and would be up to popping off on Drag Race. How do I know this? Because I asked him, because I am a journalist. “RuPaul I loved working with, he’s just a great guy,” said my actual friend Gonzo. “I would be totally up for [being a guest judge on Drag Race].” Gonzo wants it. RuPaul clearly would be in favor of it. Make it happen.

For those of you reading this, shaking your head and muttering, “The Muppets would never…” —hate to break it to you, but would they ever. Back in 2012, Miss Piggy herself showed up on Project Runway All Stars Season 1 as not only a guest judge, but the inspiration for the challenge. If Miss Piggy can be a guest judge on Project Runway then she can show up on Drag Race, too!

I’ll even go a step further: the Muppets are already Drag Race canon, henny. They inspired iconic looks from Manila Luzon and Crystal Methyd, Mayhem Miller name-dropped them in her “I’m In Love” verse, and there’s an iconic mini-challenge nearly every single season that involves—what else?—puppets! Everybody loves puppets!

Everybody loves puppets, everybody loves Muppets, and everybody loves Drag Race—so what’s not to love about a team-up? Have Fozzie and Ross coach the queens through a standup challenge. Bring on the Electric Mayhem to lay down a track for the girl group number. Pair the top contendors with some unruly Muppets for a makeover challenge (could a diva make Animal shave?). Have Gonzo show the cast how to literally death drop. Have Statler and Waldorf go in on the dolls in the reading challenge! “Night of 1000 Piggies” is the runway category that the world needs.

Until then, I’m going to keep rewatching RuPaul’s spot on Muppets Now… and I’ll keep texting my friend Gonzo for updates.
