Brendan Gleeson Transforms Into Trump in Showtime’s ‘The Comey Rule’ Trailer

Brendan Gleeson steps into President Donald Trump’s wig in Showtime’s first The Comey Rule trailer. Based on former FBI director James Comey’s bombshell memoir, A Higher Loyalty, the highly-anticipated limited series dramatizes the turbulent events surrounding the 2016 election, the Michael Flynn investigation, and the aftermath.

Showtime’s The Comey Rule teaser gives viewers their first real look at Brendan Gleeson as Trump and Jeff Daniels as James Comey. The brief spot kicks off with Trump’s inauguration in 2017, as well as his now-infamous warning to his FBI director. “I know some people have it in for me,” he says, “But I’m the president now.”

The implication is clear, but at a White House dinner a few seconds later, the president makes things explicit: “Nobody gets treated as unfairly as I do. I need loyalty.”

As Daniels’ Comey begins to look into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, he finds himself at odds with the president. “I have looked at this from every angle. They’re all terrible,” he says. “We’re steaming towards an iceberg.”

The four-part Comey Rule seems to hew closely to Comey’s No. 1 New York Times bestselling book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, but Showtime assures viewers of all stripes that they will find something new in the miniseries. “Whatever side you’re on, you only know half the story,” teases the premium cabler. With its shifting perspective, that seems to be the case.

In addition to Gleeson and Daniels, The Comey Rule stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as President Barack Obama, Michael Kelly as Andrew McCabe, Holly Hunter as Sally Yates, Scoot McNairy as Rod Rosenstein, and Jennifer Ehle as Patrice Comey. Talk about a stacked cast.

The Comey Rule was originally scheduled to debut after the November election, but Showtime pushed up the premiere date to capitalize on pre-election craziness. The miniseries will now air across two consecutive nights in late September, about six weeks before voters head to the polls.
