‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 3 to Premiere This October

It’s been far too long since Star Trek: Discovery graced our screens, but Season 3 of the hit series will finally return to CBS All Access on Thursday, October 15.

True to form for the space-faring series, it’s been an incredibly long journey to get Discovery Season 3 to screen. It was actually renewed before the second season concluded, on February 27, 2019. And though it was expected to be released in May, 2020, once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, post-production was slowed down leading to the now definite October premiere date.

Season 3 will also be a shorter season than the previous two: Season 1 aired in two chunks over 15 episodes, from September 24, 2017 to November 12, 2017, and January 7, 2018 to February 11, 2018; while Season 2 was 14 episodes long and ran from January 17, 2018 to April 18, 2019; and Season 3 will last 13 episodes, running from the aforementioned October 13 date, to January 5, 2021.

That means there will be nearly a year and a half wait to find out what happened to Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the rest of the crew when the series finally returns. And in case you’ve forgotten, which is fair because it’s been a long time, the short version is that in order to stop an A.I. apocalypse the crew of Discovery traveled approximately 930 years into the future, taking a record of nearly the entire history of the universe with them.

In Season 3, stranded and separated, the crew of Discovery must deal with a broken Federation, new threats, and of course lots of discovering. Joining the cast is David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker, a mysterious man who teams up with Burnham to stand on a rocky beach, if the scant pictures from the season provided so far are any indication.

With the August 6 debut of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will run 10 episodes, CBS All Access will be running 23 straight Thursdays of Star Trek content. It’s a little short of the seeming goal of 52 weeks of Trek, which would potentially include: a second season of Star Trek: Picard; the in development Star Trek: Strange New Worlds featuring Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck; and the long gestating Section 31 series starring Michelle Yeoh; as well as, potentially, the CG-animated Star Trek: Prodigy, which will air on Nickelodeon. However, there’s a pandemic on, so we can forgive them for only running Star Trek for half the year.

Star Trek: Discovery also stars Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz and Michelle Yeoh. You can watch a short, animated teaser for Season 3, below:
