Amazon’s ‘Invincible’ Voice Cast Teases an Epic ‘Walking Dead’ Reunion

The voice cast of Amazon Studios’ animated Invincible has just added a slew of names from The Walking Dead, as just announced at Comic-Con@Home. And those names include Lauren Cohan, which means that for fans of the post-apocalypse franchise, there’s a chance we could get the Maggie (Cohan)/Glenn (Steven Yuen) reunion of our dreams; albeit in a slightly different form that expected.

Based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, who also created Walking Dead, and artist Cory Walker, Invincible focuses on a teen named Mark Grayson who discovers he has the same superpowers as his father, the most powerful superhero on the planet. Yuen is taking on the voice role of Grayson, a.k.a. Invincible, while J.K. Simmons will voice his father, Nolan Grayson, a.k.a. Omni-Man. The adult animated series has a few twists in store (no spoilers here), but along with Walking Dead has been one of the most successful comic book projects shepherded by Kirkman.

Joining the cast as the Invincible universe’s Justice League, called the Guardians of the Globe, are current and former Walking Dead cast-members: Cohan as War Woman; Chad Coleman as Martian Man; Michael Cudlitz as Red Rush; Lennie James as Darkwing; Ross Marquand as The Immortal and Aquarius; and Sonequa Martin-Green as Green Ghost. And though War Woman is a minor character compared to Invincible, hearing the duo in scenes together will assuredly set any Walking Dead fans heart aflutter.

For those not totally familiar with Walking Dead, Maggie and Glenn is one of the series’ most epic love stories, starting in Season 2 and lasting until Glenn’s horrific death in the Season 7 premiere. After a relatively brief absence to pursue other opportunities, Cohan will be returning to Walking Dead in the still to be scheduled Season 11; while Yuen’s character doesn’t have a head, so it would be tough for him to pop up again. That means Invincible is probably our one chance to “see” the two together.

The rest of the Invincible cast is appropriately stacked, including: Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson; Mark Hamill as Art Rosebaum; Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien; Gillian Jacobs as Samantha Eve Wilkins/Atom Eve; Andrew Rannells as William Clockwell; Zazie Beetz as Amber Bennett; Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman; Jason Mantzoukas as Rex Sloan/Rex Splode; Chris Diamantopoulos as Donald Ferguson/Doc Seismic; Khary Payton as Black Samson; Zachary Quinto as Robot; Malese Jow as Kate Cha/Dupli-Kate; Kevin Michael Richardson as the Mauler Twins and Monster Girl; Grey Griffin as Shrinking Ray and Amanda; plus Mae Whitman and Max Burkholder in unannounced roles.

Invincible was previously released as a so-called “motion comic” — basically a lightly animated and voiced version of the printed issues — and broadcast on MTV2. This version of the series was previously in development as a feature film by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Universal. A year later, Amazon picked up the property as an unrelated, animated project; though Rogen is still attached, as a member of the cast.

Invincible is scheduled to debut later in 2020.
