‘Palm Springs’ Sets Opening Weekend Record at Hulu

Palm Springs is making a big splash at Hulu. The Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti romantic comedy just premiered July 10, but it’s already setting records as the biggest film debut on the streaming service, IndieWire reports.

Within its first three days on Hulu, Palm Springs set a new opening weekend record, collecting more streams than any other film in the same period, according to a Hulu rep. Palm Springs also gathered more social interest than Hulu’s other films, grabbing the attention of Twitter users during its opening weekend.

Without giving away too much of the plot, Palm Springs isn’t your typical romantic comedy. It stars Samberg as Nyles, a guest at the wedding of his girlfriend’s close friend, and Milioti as Sarah, the bride’s sister. Nyles and Sarah sneak off in the desert to hook up during the reception, but when Nyles is hunted down by a mysterious attacker, Sarah follows him and is quite literally sucked into an unexpected situation. If you’ve already seen the film and are left scratching your head, here’s our take on the ending.

Palm Springs first debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January and was sold to Hulu and Neon for just over $17.5 million, breaking the festival’s sales record by just $0.69. “Hulu insisted on the 69 cents,” Samberg joked to Entertainment Weekly. “You guys know me, I’m always wheeling and dealing and negotiating. I wasn’t drinking and hiding behind a whole team of agents and lawyers…We got way more interest than we were expecting. I kept going, ‘How much? Sounds good!’ And then when it got high enough, we went, ‘Maybe we should throw 69 cents on there so people don’t hate our guts.'”

Hulu previously scored another big film for its audience with Bong Joon-Ho‘s Oscar-winning drama Parasitewhich debuted on the streaming service in April. Although Palm Springs has set a new opening weekend record, Parasite claimed the title of most streamed independent or foreign language film on Hulu in just one week. So many people streamed the film on Hulu that it earned second place in the most-watched films on the streaming service — but after an impressive opening weekend, Palm Springs just may be coming for its spot.
