Leah Remini Rejoices at Danny Masterson Rape Charges: “This is Just the Beginning” for Scientology

Leah Remini believes justice is finally being served following years of sexual assault allegations against That ’70s Show star Danny Masterson. Shortly after the Los Angeles County District Attorney charged Masterson, a prominent Scientologist, with three counts of rape, Remini posted on social media applauding prosecutors’ decision. “Finally, victims are being heard when it comes to Scientology!” wrote Remini.

Leah Remini and Danny Masterson have a long and involved history, but his arrest (he was ultimately released on $3.3 million bond), serves as a major milestone in their contentious relationship. Where can I watch the Leah Remini and Danny Masterson interview? Is there a statute of limitations for Danny Masterson’s charges? Here’s everything you need to know.

DANNY MASTERSON CHARGED WITH THREE COUNTS OF RAPE

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney charged The Ranch star Danny Masterson with three counts of rape by force or fear. The charges stem from three separate incidents, all of which allegedly occurred between 2001 and 2003.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Masterson is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001 and a 28-year-old woman in April 2003. Authorities also claim that sometime between October and December 2003, Masterson invited another 23-year-old woman to his Hollywood Hills home and raped her.

Masterson was arrested on Wednesday morning and was released on $3.3. million bail a few hours later.

The actor has denied the rape allegations. His attorney said that he is surprised by the new charges, saying, “Obviously, Mr. Masterson and his wife are in complete shock considering that these nearly 20-year old allegations are suddenly resulting in charges being filed, but they and their family are comforted knowing that ultimately the truth will come out. The people who know Mr. Masterson know his character and know the allegations to be false.”

DANNY MASTERSON: STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS PROMTS D.A. TO DROP TWO CHARGES

THR reports that Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey declined to file two additional sexual assault charges against Masterson, “one due to insufficient evidence and the other based on the statute of limitations for the crime alleged.”

In late 2016, California passed a law that removes the statute of limitations on rape cases. However, other sexual assault cases must be prosecuted “within 10 years after the commission of the offense,” unless new DNA evidence emerges.

LEAH REMINI AND DANNY MASTERSON: A GUIDE TO THEIR LONG HISTORY

In 2017, shortly after sexual assault allegations were levied at Masterson, a well-known Scientologist, Remini accused the LAPD of covering up their investigation in order to appease Scientology leaders. In the months that followed, Remini repeatedly spoke up against Masterson, and even planned to address the sexual assault allegations in an episode of her A&E docuseries, Scientology and the Aftermath.

The episode was scheduled to air in February 2019, but was pulled from A&E’s schedule shortly before the air date. After months of back and forth, the two-hour special (which also served as the Scientology and the Aftermath series finale) finally aired in August 2019 to much fanfare. In it, Remini interviews Masterson’s alleged victims about their experiences with the actor and condemns Scientology for shielding him from justice.
