‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz, Griffin Newman Call For TV Cops to Donate to Bail Funds

They’re members of the force on TV, but now they’re stepping up to support people across the country protesting against police. Stephanie Beatriz and Griffin Newman are calling for actors who, like them, play cops on TV or have in the past, asking them to donate to the Community Justice Exchange, Vulture reports. The money raised will go toward bail funds for protestors and to help immigrants in detention centers.

Newman, who most recently starred in The Tick, began the initiative last night (June 1), pointing to his previous work playing a detective on Blue Bloods.

“I’m an out-of-work actor who (improbably) played a detective on two episodes of BLUE BLOODS almost a decade ago,” he wrote. “If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math.” Newman included a screenshot of his donation receipt showing that he gave $11,000 to the Community Justice Exchange’s Emergency Response Fund.

Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn Nine-Nineadded her own $11,000 contribution, thanking Newman for starting the movement and also calling for other actors to donate. Together, the posts spurred replies from Twitter users sharing their donations to the Community Justice Fund.

“I played a cop in my high school production of Annie,” one user shared, donating $55, while another tweeted, “Played a cop in a troma movie,” with an $1,150 donation.

“I played the Chief of Police in my high school’s production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. #BlueActorsActBlue,” added another user, sharing a $27.50 donation.

While most replies were supportive, some users noticed a lack of action from other TV cops, calling out actors who have not shared any donations to the fund. Some replies included calls for donations from Law and Order: SVU’s Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay and Beatriz’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine costars Andy Samberg and Terry Crews. None of the actors have replied yet, but Beatriz teased a cast-wide announcement related to Black Lives Matter from Brooklyn Nine-Nine this afternoon.
