AMC Acquires Anne Rice’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ and ‘Mayfair Witches’ Novels

Before audiences were caught up in the world of Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, they were enthralled by Anne Rice’s 1976 novel “Interview With the Vampire”, which was later turned into a film with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. And while the first book in her “Vampire Chronicles” series got the Hollywood treatment in 1994, many more of Rice’s works are headed to the screen decades later.

AMC announced today that they secured the rights to the author’s popular gothic novel series, as well as “The Lives of the Mayfair Witches” series — meaning they have access to 18 of Rice’s titles for adaptation.

As part of the deal with AMC,  Rice and her son, Christopher Rice, will serve as executive producers on all of the upcoming projects, the network stated. Some of the titles now up for development on AMC’s networks and streaming services include “The Vampire Lestat” “The Queen of the Damned” and “The Witching Hour”. Writer Rolin Jones (Perry Mason and Friday Night Lights) recently signed a development deal with AMC and will be working directly with the Rice’s catalog to develop television projects for the network.

“It’s always been my dream to see the worlds of my two biggest series united under a single roof so that filmmakers could explore the expansive and interconnected universe of my vampires and witches,” Rice said in a press release today. “That dream is now a reality, and the result is one of the most significant and thrilling deals of my long career.”

Both Anne and Christopher — who have worked on multiple novels together — have been trying to develop a television series based on “The Vampire Chronicles” for years, Variety reports. They had lined up a series at Hulu in 2018 with Bryan Fuller as showrunner, but the project did not further develop and Fuller left soon after signing on.

The newly announced AMC deal marks the latest adaptation since 2002’s “Queen of the Damned” film starring Stuart Townsend and Aaliyah. While two of Rice’s novels have been adapted for the big screen, television series are new territory for the author.
