What Is Hollywood on Netflix About?

It’s about hoping and dreaming and making passions into reality. Set in post-World War II Tinseltown, the series follows a group of aspiring actors, directors, and screenwriters who want only one thing: fame. Thanks to a studio head who’s sick of seeing the same forgettable regressive movies, together they manage to change Hollywood for the better, challenging this town’s and the country’s racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Half a work of fiction, half based on real Hollywood legends, this seven-episode drama tells an alternative history of the ’40s not unlike Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But whether it’s real or not, it’s a dream to behold.

Who Does Jim Parsons Play in Hollywood?

Parsons portrays one of the few main characters who was a real person, Henry Willson. A talent agent for Hollywood, Willson was a majorly involved in developing cinema’s beefcake craze in the 1950s. His clients included Rock Hudson, Tab Hunter, Chad Everett, Robert Wagner, Guy Madison, and John Saxon. He was also instrumental in developing Rhonda Fleming and Lana Turner’s careers.

Willson was known to frequent gay bars in the early stages of his career to scout for talent. But just as Hollywood portrays, the real Willson had a dark side. He would regularly force his young, male clients to have sexual relations with him, promising to further their careers if they cooperated and threatening to blackmail them if they didn’t. After his own homosexuality became public knowledge, he was professionally abandoned by the industry. He died unemployed and destitute in 1974.
