‘Parasite’ Breaks Records on Hulu After Streaming For One Week

People must have skipped seeing one of 2019’s buzziest movies and are only checking it out now, or they’re eager to re-watch it from home — either way, Parasite has exploded on Hulu after its exclusive debut on the streaming service April 8. After only one week, the Oscar-winning film officially claimed the title of most streamed independent or foreign language film on Hulu, IndieWire reports.

Parasite also surged to second place in the list of most-watched movies overall on the streaming service. At number two in the list, it’s above movies that have been on Hulu for months, including How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, A Quiet Place, Transformers: The Last Knight and Creed II.

Hulu first snagged the rights to Bong Joon-Ho’s drama as part of a deal with production company NEON, which also produced Portrait of a Lady on Fire (also currently streaming on Hulu). Parasite absolutely swept awards season after its debut at Cannes last year. The film won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes, and took home the Oscars for Best Picture (as the first South Korean film to be nominated), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film in January. The class-based and social drama tells the story of a poor family in South Korea who trick their way into working for a much richer family to benefit from their wealth, with a devastating ending. It stars Song Kang-ho, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam and Jang Hye-jin.

When Parasite came to Hulu April 8, the streaming service also added three other Bong Joon-Ho films. If you’ve already watched the thriller and want to explore more of the director’s work, you can watch Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Mother (2009) and The Host (2006), all streaming on Hulu now.
