Let’s get this out of the way: I love Stumptown. ABC’s Cobie Smulders-led crime drama has swagger to spare as an outstanding cast, crisp writing, compelling storytelling, and a killer soundtrack all combine to make Stumptown one of the best new shows of 2019.

But will all that pizazz be enough to earn the entertaining series a second season?

Despite an all-star ensemble that includes Jake Johnson, Michael Ealy, Cole Sibus, Camryn Manheim, and Adrian Martinez, ABC has yet to renew their freshman charmer for a sophomore season. Will there be a Season 2 of Stumptown? Allow us to do our best Dex Parios impersonation and investigate this puzzling pop culture mystery.

HAS STUMPTOWN BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 2?

*** UPDATE: Despite previously earning a Season 2 renewal, ABC has reversed its decision and canceled Stumptown. However, studio ABC Signature will be shopping Stumptown to other networks and streaming services, so it’s possible the drama could live on elsewhere. ***

WILL THERE BE A STUMPTOWN SEASON 2?

Oh man, I really, really hope so. Despite middling ratings, the series has earned critical success (it currently has a Certified Fresh 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and attracted a cult following. Plus, without getting into spoiler territory, the Season 1 finale perfectly sets the stage for a potential second season.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Stumptown co-creator Jason Richman expressed his desire for another season, noting that “the show just has so much story left to tell.”

“It feels in some ways like we’re really just getting started,” Richman said. “But just as a creative person in general, you always try to stay in the middle and prepare yourself for any outcome. But I’m hopeful.”

Hopeful is the best word to describe Stumptown’s prospects. It could honestly go either way, but considering the show’s abundance of star power, critical success, and passionate fanbase, I believe ABC will renew the series for a second season.

WHEN WILL STUMPTOWN SEASON 2 PREMIERE ON ABC?

IF (and hopefully WHEN) Stumptown is renewed, we’d normally expect a late September/early October 2020 premiere, but production schedules have obviously been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

No one knows how long this will last, but we expect that production delays will continue, which means that the potential second season premiere of Stumptown could be delayed until late 2020/early 2021.
