Meghan McCain Slams Bernie Sanders for Fidel Castro Comments: It’s Like “Saying Hitler Was a Good Orator”

When it comes to The View‘s co-hosts, they certainly aren’t feeling the Bern. On Tuesday morning, the panel tore into Sen. Bernie Sanders for praising Fidel Castro’s “literacy program,” a sentiment that he doubled down on during a town hall on Monday night. For once, the panel was in agreement that Sanders’ defense of Castro is a “bad” move, particularly as his remarks may alienate Latino voters in Florida. “It’s no different than saying, ‘Hitler was a good orator,'” ripped Meghan McCain. “It’s that insane!”

The View co-hosts wasted no time on Tuesday morning before tearing into Sanders, the current frontrunner in the 2020 Democratic primary. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg opened the show by noting that despite his recent success in Nevada, Sanders has “left himself wide open [by] doubling down on his praise for Cuban leader Fidel Castro.” In a televised town hall on Monday night, Sanders complimented one of Castro’s early policies, saying, “He initiated a major literacy program … They went out and they helped people learn to read and write. You know what? I think teaching people to read and write is a good thing.”

“It’s a dictatorship. There’s nothing groovy about a dictatorship!” said Goldberg this morning. “There’s just nothing good about a dictatorship!” Sunny Hostin agreed, adding that Sanders’ comment likely won’t sit well with the large Cuban community in Florida. “They hear this word ‘revolution’ … it reminds them, over and over again, of what happened in Cuba,” she said. “If the Democratic nominee is Bernie and he’s saying these things and he’s this Democratic Socialist, that is not going to do well in Florida, a swing state, for that Latino contingent. They are not going to forgive him for this position.”

When Behar added that “it should concern Republicans that Trump is in bed with dictators, also,” McCain pushed back, saying that for the past three years, she’s listened to Democrats say that Trump’s “cozyness with Putin” is an issue. “I thought that your party was supposed to be better than this?” she said. “If you’re talking about how [Venezuelan president Nicolas] Maduro’s a good guy, Castro did some good things — for me, it’s no different than saying, ‘Hitler was a good orator.’ It’s that insane!”

“How about, ‘Mussolini let the trains run on time,'” said Behar. “Exactly! That’s exactly what it is!” replied McCain. “We’re all on the same page with this. What a day.” What a day, indeed.
