Trump Slams ‘Parasite’s Best Picture Win: “What the Hell Was That All About?”

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite may have stunned awards voters all season, but not everyone is buying into the hype. On Thursday night, President Trump went on a bizarre rant about Parasite, which made history at the 2020 Oscars when it became the first non-English film to win Best Picture. During a Colorado Springs campaign rally, Trump complained that the Best Picture winner is “a movie from South Korea” rather than an American film like Gone with the Wind, which was released in 1940. “Did this ever happen before?”

Last night, Trump took a quick break from blasting his Democratic rivals to bemoan Parasite‘s Oscars sweep. “How bad were the Academy Awards this year? Did you see?” asked Trump, prompting a round of boos from the audience. “And the winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about?”

“We got enough problems with South Korea with trade,” he continued. “On top of it, they give them the best movie of the year. Was it good? I don’t know.”

Trump went on to say that the academy should have honored something like Gone with the Wind, which won nine Academy Awards in 1940, including Best Picture, but has long been criticized for its depiction of African Americans. “Can we get Gone with the Wind back, please?” he asked, adding that Sunset Boulevard — a 1950 drama that did not win Best Picture (it won two other awards) — would also have been a fine winner. “So many great movies. The winner is… from South Korea,” repeated Trump. “Did this ever happen before?”

Neon, Parasite‘s U.S. production and distribution company, wasted no time before responding to Trump’s rant. “Understandable, he can’t read,” they wrote alongside a video of the moment.

But Parasite wasn’t Trump’s only target on Thursday night: the president also went after Best Supporting Actor winner Brad Pitt, who took a swipe at Republicans during his acceptance speech. “They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” said Pitt, after winning an Oscar for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. “I’m thinking maybe Quentin [Tarantino] does a movie about it. In the end, the adults do the right thing.”

Trump didn’t take kindly to the slight. “I was never a big fan of his,” he told the Colorado audience, adding that Pitt is “a little wiseguy.”
