10 Valentine’s Day Movies to Stream on Disney+

It’s Valentine’s Day and honestly, absolutely no shade if you and your boo’s big night consists of dinner at home and a streaming service. 2020 is already thoroughly exhausting, so treat yourself to some rest and relaxation along with romance. And since Disney+ debuted last November, that means this is our very first Valentine’s Day with the newbie. You already know that Disney+ has a stacked library with all the Marvel, Star Wars, and animated Disney films. But what about when it comes to romance? Who are the hot couples and what are the sweeping love stories on Disney+?

Below you’ll find a list of 10 great Valentine’s Day stories available to stream on Disney+, arranged by release date. There are a few expected choices (the Disney animated canon is filled with almost nothing but love stories!) as well as a few surprises (you’re not going to make a Disney+ list and not include some Marvel and Star Wars). There are even a few movies that you may not have realized are available to watch on Disney+, maybe because on of them was just added today. Disney+ knows what day it is!

Check out our list of the best Valentine’s Day movies to stream on Disney+, and then get ready for a nice night in with your new favorite platform.

A list of romantic movies on Disney+ would not be complete without a few entries from the princess canon, so let’s talk about Cinderella. The romance in this one is real (this movie has the Prince Charming in it) and Cinderella’s makeover is more of a gag than anything on Queer Eye. But Cinderella is a must-watch on Valentine’s Day because it’s a blast, with great villains and buddies paired with one of the most cheer-worthy Disney heroines ever.

'The Aristocats' (1970)

If princesses aren’t your jam, you can check out the unlikely romance between the super pampered Duchess and one charismatic alleycat, the dashing Thomas O’Malley. The Aristocats is essentially 101 Dalmatians with cats (obvs), but there’s a real will they/won’t they dynamic between these star-crossed cats that Pongo and Perdita didn’t have. Maybe that’s a weird thing to say about animated cats but, y’know, The Aristocats is as sophisticated as it is cute.

'Robin Hood' (1973)

This list would not be complete without including one of the most crush-able rouges in the entire Disney library: Robin Hood. The sly fox inspired thousands of crushes, and with good reason! He’s a lovable scoundrel and the “steal from the rich/give to the poor” ethos is super attractive in 2020. Plus, he’s into Lady Marian, a fierce character in her own right! Honestly, Robin and Marian may just be the Disney couple to beat.

'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' (1980)

Star Wars changed the game when it debuted in 1977, thus establishing pretty high stakes for the 1980 sequel. But The Empire Strikes Back succeeded by branching out into totally new territory: the screwball, retro-style, mismatched love story. The bickering banter between Han Solo and Princess Leia added a totally new, totally human dimension to the fledgling sci-fi franchise, and it gave pop culture a new it couple. You bet that the most romantic moment on this entire list takes place in a carbon-freezing chamber.

'Splash' (1984)

As of today, you can now stream the Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah romcom Splash on Disney+. Years before Hanks was the most celebrated actor of our time, he was the go-to guy for lovable schlubs who fall headfirst into unlikely romances. In Splash, that romance is with a mermaid. The movie was such a big hit, it helped keep Disney afloat in the ’80s while their animated features sank at the box office. Splash was such a big hit that it even impacted the design of The Little Mermaid, with animators switch Ariel to a redhead to distinguish her from Hannah!

'Beauty and the Beast' (1991)

Disney’s Oscar-winning masterpiece just so happens to be one of their most epic romances of all time. The score is operatic, the songs are iconic, the characters are lovable, and the central relationship has more stakes and tension than you usually get in a Disney movie. Brave and loyal, smart and proud, it’s no wonder Belle became a hero to a whole generation. If you haven’t seen Beauty and the Beast in a while, tonight’s the night to fix that.

'10 Things I Hate About You' (1999)

Who knew you could drop Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew into a high school setting and end up with a legit classic? Well, ’90s kids knew because we grew up with 10 Things I Hate About You, the movie that made us fall in love with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. 10 Things is also a blast to watch because it has a cast that’s packed with “I forgot they were in this” faces, like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Allison Janney, and Gabrielle Union. This throwback is a must-watch, especially for any high school sweethearts still holding it down.

This list would not be complete without a Marvel movie, considering that Disney+ is now the home to nearly the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, Marvel movies have made great date night movies for couples for the past ten years! Of all the MCU films, though, none are as romantic as the first Captain America movie. Not only does the WWII-setting make the film feel like a lost treasure of old Hollywood, but it features the crackling chemistry between Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. Maybe do yourself a favor and pair this movie with the last bit of Avengers: Endgame, just so you can get a happy ending.

'Aladdin' (2019)

This billion-dollar hit somehow made one of the best Disney couples even better. You love animated Aladdin and Jasmine, sure, but the live-action version is one jump ahead because of a new song, “Speechless.” The tune is part of Jasmine’s increased role in the film, a fantastic decision for an already fantastic character. You can’t go wrong by choosing to watch an Aladdin on Valentine’s Day, but “Speechless” might just be the tie-breaker.

'Lady and the Tramp' (2019)

Disney’s live-action remakes continue onto Disney+ with a new Lady and the Tramp. The original remains a gorgeous triumph of animation, but it’s hard to deny the overwhelming adorable-ness of this cast of dogs. The film cast Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux in the title roles as the mismatched pooches, and it includes some Janelle Monae tunes too! Doesn’t that sound like the perfect Valentine’s Day movie? Cook up some pasta and put this one on (but you’ll have to cook a special spaghetti for your dog).
