‘Parasite’ Becomes the First Non-English Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars

Parasite won Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday night, making it the first non-English-language film to ever win the award. It beat out 1917, Sam Mendes’s war film, which was favored to win.

Bong Joon-Ho also won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature for Parasite, making it a big night of wins for the South Korean director and his film about a poor family who slowly infiltrates the life of a rich family through the ultimate series of scams.

When the Best Picture win was announced, the crowd lept to its feet, cheering wilding.

Producer Kwak Sin-ae accepted the award and spoke first, saying, “We never imagined this to happen, we are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”

The director joked in his speech for Best Director that he thought he could relax after winning Best International Film. He couldn’t have been more wrong. He also profusely thanked the other directors nominated, including Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Phillips, and Sam Mendes, and joked, “I would like to get a Texas Chainsaw, split the Oscar trophy into five, and share it with all of you.”

Parasite—which stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam—joins other Best Picture winners like Moonlight, The Shape of Water, Spotlight, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, and so many more. But just because your personal favorite Best Picture pick lost tonight doesn’t mean that film won’t go down in history as a really great film. Don’t forget, movies like Pulp Fiction and The Philadelphia Story also lost Best Picture, but I think it’s safe to say those two movies have been better remembered than say, a Best Picture winner like Birdman.

Other key wins at the 2020 Oscars included Renee Zellweger, who won Best Actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy; Joaquin Phoenix, who took home the Best Actor statue for Joker; Laura Dern, who won Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story; and Brad Pitt who won Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

And that’s it! Awards season is officially over, and Film Twitter can finally get some much-needed sleep. Or, more likely, they’ll find something new to fight about within days. Goodnight!
