Patricia Arquette Accidentally Hit Joey King with Her Golden Globe

Patricia Arquette, go off. On Sunday, The Act star had an eventful night at the 2020 Golden Globes, where she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Hulu limited series. But it’s possible that her co-star (and fellow nominee) Joey King had an even more eventful evening: on Monday, King revealed that Arquette accidentally hit her in the head with her Golden Globe statue, leaving a circle-shaped bruise on her head. Did we learn nothing from the story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard?

On Monday afternoon (or around 9 a.m. on the West Coast), King shared two photos of her Golden Globe-induced injury on Twitter. “Patricia Arquette accidentally hit me in the head with her Golden Globe,” wrote The Act and The Kissing Booth star. “That sentence will give me bragging rights for the rest of my life.”

King’s tweet immediately went viral, and within half an hour, her co-star responded with an apology. “What happens in the elevator stays in the elevator!” joked Arquette. “No seriously I’m so sorry sweetest one!”

As you can imagine, Twitter had a field day with King’s accidental injury, particularly after watching the two butt heads — in this case, pun intended — in The Act Season 1. Based on a true story, the Hulu limited series stars King as Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a teenage girl attempting to escape a toxic relationship with her overbearing mother Dee Dee (Arquette). “Dee Dee still abusing our sweet Gypsy Rose,” joked one fan.

Golden Globes fanatics were quick to point out that the injury must have happened while filming a video at the InStyle and Warner Bros. afterparty. In the brief clip (watch it below), the co-stars celebrate the win in an elevator; right as Arquette raises her arms, King bows her head, accidentally head butting the statue. The elevator doors close before we can see King’s reaction, but judging by that bruise, it wasn’t pretty.

A quick search through Getty suggests that the moment in question happened right before the stars walked the afterparty red carpet (King’s bruise seems to be forming as they move along the carpet, and by the time they’re in the party, it’s fully visible).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Joey! Although, if you can make it through The Act‘s harrowing teeth pulling scene, you can make it through anything.
