‘Murder Mystery’ Was Netflix’s Most Popular Title of 2019

All hail Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. On Monday, Netflix revealed that Sandler-Aniston comedy Murder Mystery was its most popular release of 2019, followed by Stranger Things Season 3 and Ryan Reynolds action flick 6 Underground. Murder Mystery‘s dominance comes as no surprise given its banner year: when the film first debuted in June, it broke Netflix’s three-day viewership record, and it went on to nab 73 million viewers in its first four weeks on the service.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s “Most Popular Releases of 2019” list includes seven films and three series that hit the platform in 2019. All of the titles listed are Netflix Originals, with one exception: The Incredibles 2, which ranks in fourth place on the list. In a year of Oscar-worthy films, the most popular movie was Murder Mystery, followed by 6 Underground — which was just released in early December — Incredibles 2, and Martin Scorsese’s mob drama The Irishman.

On the TV side, Stranger Things Season 3 reigned supreme. During its Q3 call in October, the streaming giant revealed that the sci-fi drama’s third season was its most-watched to date, bringing in 64 million views in its first four weeks on Netflix. The second-most watched show was The Witcher, which has proved popular with viewers despite mixed reviews from critics. The fantasy epic currently boasts a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but only a 59% Critics Score.

According to Netflix, other popular shows released in 2019 include The Umbrella Academy, Dead to Me, and You Season 2. The Penn Badgley thriller has only been on Netflix for four days, but already ranks in fifth place on Netflix’s Most Popular TV Shows list.
