‘Forky Asks a Question’ on Disney+ is a Work of Genius

Disney+ launched today, bringing an exhaustive list of classic films, MCU blockbusters, Disney Channel favorites, and The Mandalorian to streaming. However, the jewel in Disney+’s programming crown isn’t the first ever live-action Star Wars series nor is it the Disney vault. It’s a series of Pixar shorts called Forky Asks a Question.

I’m serious when I say that the premiere of Forky Asks a Question is the great television event of our time.

(Sorry, Game of Thrones finale.)

Pixar’s new series Forky Asks a Question is sheer perfection. Each episode is a mere three minutes long, and each second is packed with artistry. From the opening credits that feature Tony Hale‘s Forky pondering life’s great mysteries to the hilarious stingers at the end, not a single frame is wasted.

The general gist of Forky Asks a Question is that in the wake of Toy Story 4, newly conscious Forky still has a lot of questions about life that need answering. Forky was originally a spork, meant to be trash, but salvaged through the craftsmanship of young Bonnie. The child turned Forky into a toy and thus gave him awareness. However, since Forky wasn’t designed to be a toy, he spends most of Toy Story 4 pushing back against his very existence.

Forky Asks a Question follows young Forky as he navigates his new life as a toy. He asks big questions like “What is money?” and “What is a friend?” Forky’s own innocent naiveté often leads to moments of profound wisdom, even if Forky is too dim-witted to comprehend his own musings.

In the first two episodes of Forky Asks a Question, the piggy bank Hamm (John Ratzenberger) is trying to help guide Forky as he ponders life’s big questions. However, the show belongs fully to Forky. Tony Hale’s voice work is next level, as he manipulates the volume and timbre of his voice to show off Forky’s the scattered inner spirit. He’s funny, he’s philosophical, and he’s at times heart-breaking.

Still Forky Asks a Question suggests that it is possible to make something short and sweet in the age of bloated streaming seasons. In fact, Forky Asks a Question seems to argue that the more economic the storytelling, the better. This, coupled with the fact that it’s one of the first original series to launch on Disney+, seems to position the series as an important event. I would argue that Forky Asks a Question is the greatest television event of our age, if only because it’s so darn good.

Episode 1 of Forky Asks a Question, “What is money?” is streaming on Disney+ now, and Episode 2, “What is a friend?” premieres on Disney+ this Friday, November 15.
