Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t kidding about that whole “I’ll be back” thing, because there is about to be another Terminator film in theaters. That’s right, Terminator: Dake Fate opens this Friday. It’s the sixth film in the Terminator franchise, but what makes Dake Fate extra special is it’s the first film since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day to involve the franchise’s original director, James Cameron. Cameron won’t be directing Dark Fate—that job belongs to Deadpool‘s Tim Miller—but he is producing, and co-wrote the story.
Dark Fate opens in 1998. Three years after defeating the evil artificial intelligence Skynet, Sarah Connor (played by actor Linda Hamilton) is relaxing on a beach with her son John. Unfortunately, an aging Terminator from the future (Arnold Schwarzenegger) appears and kills John. Thirty years later, a more advanced Terminator named Grace (Mackenzie Davis) is on her own time travel mission and teams up with a much older Sarah Connor. Awesome robot battles and action scenes ensue.
If you missed some of Terminator films over the years, don’t worry. According to Cameron, Dark Fate is a direct sequel to Judgment Day, while films three through five should be considered an alternate timeline.
