Like The Disaster Artist—James Franco’s tribute to Hollywood’s favorite weirdo, Tommy Wiseau—a large portion of Dolemite is My Name is dedicated to recreating a low-budget, DIY, and completely ridiculous movie. Eddie Murphy stars in the new Netflix film as Rudy Ray Moore, a comedian and actor best known for his 1975 blaxploitation crime film, Dolemite. Dolemite Is My Name, directed by Craig Brewer and written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, is not only about that 1975 film—it also covers Moore’s rise as a stand-up comedian via his alter-ego, a pimp named Dolemite—but the film within the film is the main event.
As we see in the film, Moore had several successful comedy albums before he decided to put together a film crew. He got playwright Jerry Jones to write the script (played by Keegan Michael Key), actor D’Urville Martin to direct (Wesley Snipes), and his friend Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) to co-star. He hired film students to handle the technical aspects like lighting and cinematography. He transformed an abandoned hotel into a make-shift set. He gave himself a crash course in kung fu. And then he filmed his first movie, Dolemite, which is, by all accounts, ludicrous.
There are many, many differences between Wiseau and Moore, but the most significant for the purposes of Dolemite Is My Name is that Moore, a comedian, was always in on the joke. He wants people to laugh at him, and laugh you will. If you’re looking for a fun movie night, the original Dolemite is a guaranteed good time. As you may have gathered from Dolemite Is My Name, this is a movie with a lot of swearing and nudity, so maybe don’t watch it with your kids in the room.
